Outer Alley - The road to past, and the longest path in 100-years-before Daegu

The Outer Alley is located on the left side of Yakjeon Alley. From 1590, when the city wall of Daegu was constructed till its deterioration, this alley, actually a larger street, was called Yongname Dae Ro or Kyungbu Ga Do, or more intimately, the “Front Outer Alley at Nammun.” This alley usually connected the US millitary installation of the 8th Army, Bongsan Culture Alley and to Dalsung Park, Dalsung Elementary School, and to downtown Chilgok to the north. As Yakryung market settled down, various inns, pubs, and restaurant opened on this alley to further expand the Yakryung market’s functions making it filled up with the scent of the medial herbs.

Gyesan Catholic Church

First established by a Chinese architect, Kang Eui Gwan. The arch bishop of Daegu invited three Chinese architect from Sandong, China, and among them were Kang and Mo Mun Guem. They build a red brick factory at Namsan-dong and the bricks from there were used in building many famous modern buildings such as the arch bishop’s residence, the catholic university. The bell tower was built by the donation from Seo Sang Don and Maria Jung in 1910.

Gyesan Literature Center

The facility of Yesa Hyosung Elementary school has been remodeled and reopened as a literature center. This location was used as an old Korean school, Seodang, in 100 years ago. The name of the place at that time was Hae Sung Jae.

Nameless Noodle House

People wait in line for more than one hour during lunch time to have a bite of the Kalguksu (a kind of Korean noodle) from this place. This shop used to located at Hwanyak Alley but moved to its current location more than 10 years ago.

Jaehwan / Jaetang Alley

Capsular Medicine’s Association has been around for more than 15 years and the member shops are in vigorous business since then at this alley. This alley is connected to the Outer Alley.

Old Residence of Woo Sang Taek

The Woo brothers (Woo Jongsik, Woo Jongmuk) took down the old residence of Seo Sang Don who initiated National Debt Compensation movement and built a wedding hall in 1965. The first head of the hall was Woo Jong Sik and his son, Woo Sang Taek succeeded him. The wedding hall officially shut down its business as of June 12, 1999, with the most extravagant wedding at 1 p.m., June 10, in memory of its history since 1934. The old residence of Woo Sang Taek is now used by a Korean restaurant called “Yetnal Jip (Old House)” since January 2002.

Japanese Restaurant, "Sagai"

Used to be a luxury Korean restaurant and bar, “Ilsimgwan,” which received regular visits by three former Korean Presidents, Park Jeong Hee, Roh Tae Woo, Jeon Doo Hwan. Ilsimgwan shut down in 1997 and was changed into what it is now.
