Dongsan Area - Montmartre of Daegu, Dongsan

Dongsan is a sacred place for the Christian community in Daegu. The hill itself was formerly owned by Suh clan. The location began to gather attention as a grave site since Guiam Seowon moved here from Yeonguisan. At that time, people sneaked in and vary their deceased to have as the luck the grave site bore could be available to them by varying their deceased in the location. As a result, the land price collapsed and the premises got sold to missionaries after the opening of the country at the end of Chosun dysnasty to foreign missions. The missionaries from the West settled in and began their activities by establishing various schools such as Geysung School, Shinmyung School, Jaejungwon (now Dongsan Medical Center), Jaeill Church, and the residences for the missionaries themselves. This is the only place where you can see western style gardens and lawns.

Dongsan Museum

Formerly the residences of the missionaries who established what is now Dongsan Medical Center. A stubborn outfit with a harmony between a western styled garden and Korean traditional housings with the western manner. Had been used as a residence of the head of the hospital until 1997. The foundation of the building came from the rocks after Daegu Eupsung ( a fort around Daegu) was torn down. The beauty of the building itself, as well as the inner movement and built-in furnitures have been topics for academic researches for years. There is also a historical museum for the missionary, medicine, and education.

Missionaries’ Alley
- Count the stairs.

This alley, which connects the residences of the missionaries and Jaejungwon (what is now Dongsan Medical Center), Shinmyung School, Geysung School, and the downtown of the city, is called ‘Missionaryies’ Alley’ for its obvious origin. A small and cozy trail that consists of 90 stairs in total along with a beautiful trail in the wood. Also called as ‘3.1 Alley’ as the 3.1 movement in the city first started in this location.

Dongsan Medical Center

Originated from Jaejungwon, established in 1889 at a location within the Old Medicine Alley which was previously occupied by Jaeil Church by Mr. Johnson who was a missionary sent to Korea by Northern Presbyterian Church of America. This is also famous as the first modern hospital where the western medicine was practice in the entire Daegu-Gyungbuk region.

Garden of Eden

Refreshing green lawn with tall elm trees, persimmon trees and many others alike. Have a time to be alone and get away from the stress of the city. A book, the green lawn, and a peaceful afternoon sunlight is all you need to become the world’s happiest person!

Seonbi’s Village

Many Seonbies, who are Confucius scholars of old Choseon dyunasty, visited this village to share their poetries and calligraphic creations. This place has been called as Seonbi’s Village since one of the members of Suh Clan of Dalsung referred to it as such in a recent event a few years ago. In this place, traditional Korean style houses are well preserved and therefore there are a considerable possibility for it to become a famous tourist destination in the future.

Guiam Seowon

A Seowon is an institute for the Confucius scholars. This location was originally the site of Guiam Seowon, where valueable wood signs, historical books on the clan, old letters, poetries and other cultural heritage was stored. Unfortunately, due to the nature of privately owned cultural objects they need more dedicated management. The descendants of Suh clan of Dalsung still live in vicinity. Guiam Seowon itself has moved to a hill behind the Provincial Administration Office in Sangyuk-dong, but the land is still in the clan’s posession, while they tried to liquidate it in vain so far.
Guiam Seowon is a place where they worship their forefathers, such as Suh Geojung, Suh Hae, Suh Sung. Founded in 1665 and moved to its current location in Dongsan-dong in 1718. The mortuaries of Suh Geojung, Suh Sung, Suh Hae are attended here

Ivy Museum

The garden of Dongsan Medical Center has many kinds of ivy plants to see, most of which have been planted by the missionaries who founded the hospital. Most of them have been around for more than 90 years.
Doctor’s residences, Missionaries’ Museum, Shinmyung Woman’s High School, and Sangmyung Woman’s Junior High School are all famous with their ivy-covered buildings and therefore known as the "Ivy Museum."
