Donghwasa Temple

Palgongsan Mountain is referred to as the sacred place of Buddhism, holding Donghwasa Temple with 11 pieces of treasures. If you enter the Bonghwangmun Gate and go up along the road, you will be greeted with the Great Unification Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, known as the world’s largest stone statue of the Buddha, on your left side. With a height of 30m and a maximum circumference of 16.5m, this stone statue was built in 1992 and now is attracting attention as a new landmark of Donghwasa Temple. If you go up the road along the valley and cross Haetalgyo Bridge, you will be bound for Bongseoru Pavilion and Daeungjeon Hall. As you search for treasures scattered in every nook and cranny, such as the three-story stone pagoda of Biroam Hermitage and Geumdangam Hermitage, the fragrance of a thousand-year old temple piles up one by one snugly inside yourself.

Donghwasa Temple Stay

While experiencing the Donghwasa Temple Stay, you will get the energy of life and wisdom as well as take the best rest along with the nature. You will learn a simple temple etiquette, and get your own time strolling around the temple. Though it is somewhat awkward, you can complete the communal Buddhist meal service safely, and then engage in the service of the Buddhist temple bell and try to strike the bell by yourself.

Donghwasa Temple (Seon Meditation Center)

Donghwasa Temple (Seon Meditation Center) is in the basement of the Great Unification Statue of Buddha. There are Zen Cultural Center, the Millennium Hall of the First Edition of the Tipitaka Koreana (the complete collection of Buddhist Sutras), and the site for meditation, and you can meet with the relics of Shakyamuni Buddha and the stone carving of the Sutra of the Lotus. You can directly experience the meditation at the site for meditation and meet with various attractions such as the Golden Stupa Pagoda, the Statue of Buddha’s Foot, and the Bronze Alter Portrait of Day and Night Bodhisattva.

Temple Food Experience Center

In May 2015, the Temple Food Experience Center of Donghwasa Temple was opened. At 11:00 every Sunday, you can directly cook and taste the traditional temple dishes. You can cook three kinds of temple dishes for two hours and taste various temple foods including watermelon kimchi, espresso pancake, and deep fired black sesame bean curd. At the temple, they say food is also a kind of asceticism. They eat food with a thankful heart to the sky for cultivating the ingredient, to the farmers who take trouble, and then to the cookers.

Time Travel of Plodding Your Way to Palgongsan Mountain

Travel through time at the Ancient Tombs at Bullo-dong, housing one and a half millennia of life, and the 400-year-old Otgol Village. The hospitality at Pyeonggwang-dong Apple Village, continuing the tradition of Daegu apple, and the ageless Bullo-dong traditional market adds a nice touch. Dansanji Lake

Water meanderingly flowing down the deep valley of Palgongsan Mountain gathered here, creating a small lake. The name of this lake deeply surrounded by Palgongsan Mountain is Dansanji. You can walk along the lake for an hour or so, or try the 6th course of Palgongsan Olle-gil, which leads to Bullo-dong Ancient Tombs.

Bullo Traditional Market

Bullo Traditional Market boasts 80 years of tradition. Like a traditional market, you can find anything you need in this traditional market. Especially, among them, you can enjoy some popular local specialties such as Pyeonggwang-dong apple which is the pride of Daegu citizens, Bullo makgeolli (unrefined rice wine), and clean agricultural products grown in the valley of Palgongsan Mountain. There are enormous kinds of food to appease your hunger, and many things to enjoy such as the Oullim Theater and the Woodcraft Complex.

Bullo-dong Ancient Tombs

In the Bullo-dong tomb cluster, located on a small hill behind the Bullo Traditional Market, there are 214 tombs of ancient dynasties. Climb up a hillside after passing through the secluded tombs, and then you will see the scenery of the city unfolded. Both the old tombs and the forest of apartment houses are spread in one space beyond the 1,500-year interval.

Otgol Village

This place that makes you feel as if you are in a remote rural area is Otgol Village located less than 10 minutes after leaving the center of city. In a rapidly changing metropolis, this village has silently preserved itself for 400 years of time. Otgol Village, wrapped by the foot of Palgongsan Mountain like a folding screen, is the hometown of Gyeongju Choi clan. The beautiful stone wall road and the Baekbul Old House, the oldest house in Daegu, greet you.

Dodong Thuja Forest

Pyeonggwang-dong Apple Village

Pyeonggwang-dong Apple Village, spread endlessly with apple orchards, retains tradition of Daegu apple. In spring, the whole village is filled with the scent of apple blossoms and, in autumn, trees with red apples provide an attractive landscape. In addition to apple trees, there are Cheombaekdang House, Gwangbok Pine Tree, and Moyoungjae House on the village road, which is the Palgongsan Olle-gil course 4. In autumn, you can also experience picking apples.

The Happiness of Slowness Enjoyed While Walking on Two Feet and Making with Two Hands

There are some days when you want to put down your breathless routine for a while. On such a day, try to do some trivial matters such as walking slowly while smelling the pine tree scent and making a nameplate awkwardly with your own hands, then the stress will fall away completely. While listening to the clear sound of brassware at the Daegu Bangjja Brassware Museum and walking along the way toward Gatbawi Rock with small wishes, you will be filled with the happiness provided by the slowness.

Road to Bukjijangsa Temple

‘Road to Bukjijangsa Temple’, which is Palgongsan Olle-gil Course 1, was opened first among the Palgongsan Mountain Olle-gil. As two hours are enough for round trip even if you walk slowly, it is the course for people of all ages to walk lightly. After passing through the poets’ path where heart-breaking poems touch the right chords and then Daegu Bangjja Brassware Museum, you will meet with the path of thick pine trees covering the sky and then the Bukjijangsa Temple is located at the end of the road.

Historic Site of General Shin Sung-gyeom

Palgongsan Mountain has numerous place names related to King Taejo Wang Geon. One of them is the historic site of General Shin Sung-gyeom. When King Taejo Wang Geon was besieged by the Hubaekje army in the Gongsan and Dongsu Battle, General Shin Sung-gyeom changed into Taejo’s helmet and armor and lured the enemy to save Wang Geon’s life. Wang Geon piled an alter at the site where General Shin died in commemoration of his death in defense of his loyalty, and then the historic site was built at the site to pay a tribute to his patriotic deeds.

Gatbawi Rock

At Gwanbong Peak, located at the eastern end of the Palgongsan Mountain ridge, stands straight Gwanbong Seated Stone Buddha, which is treasure No 431. This rock is called Gatbawi because it looks like wearing the gat (Korean traditional hat made of bamboo and horsehair) on its head. It is known as the first of Korea’s Bhaisajyaguru (the physician of soul) belief. As it is said that ‘this rock grants one wish of anyone,’ numerous people having their own wish frequently visit this place

Jipijigi (Know your enemy and yourself)
Journey to Learn and Listen

A trip to learn and listen to nature is a shortcut to Jipijigi. You can get colored with the nature at the Museum of Natural Dye Arts, bathe with the sound of water at Sutaegol Village, and learn how to protect yourself at the Daegu Safety Theme Park. Finally, if you look down the mountains and streams of Palgongsan Mountain, you will feel both your body are reassured.

Museum of Natural Dye Arts

On the way to Pagyesa Temple in Palgongsan Mountain, there is Museum of Natural Dye Arts in a quiet countryside a little far from the village. You can see folk materials related to textiles including natural dyed relics and tools as well as natural dyed art works, and experience natural dying, hanji (traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees), and patterns.

Buinsa Temple

The Buinsa Temple, founded by Queen Seondeok in the middle of the 7th century, is a thousand-year-old temple still holding relics of the queen. It was a large temple that had 39 annexed hermitages in the Silla and Goryeo dynasties and 2,000 monks practiced asceticism. It is also written as 'Buinsa (夫人寺)' in honor of Queen Seondeok (善德女王) and is also used as 'Buinsa (符仁寺)' derived from the storage of the Chojo Daejanggyeong, the first Tripitaka Koreana of Goryeo Dynasty.

Sutaegol Valley

The true character of Palgongsan Mountain having good mountain as well as clear water is completely dissolved in Sutaegol Valley. Heat of the scorching sun in Daegu, which is notorious in Korea, becomes very despondent in Sutaegol. Even on the roasting hot days, if only go to the entrance of Sutaegol Valley, a cool breeze welcomes you. The valley is deep and wooded to the extent that it is hard to believe this is a valley in a large city. If you immerse your feet in cold water of the valley, you will feel piquant at the tip of your head.

The Palgongsan Mtn. Cable Car is the most comfortable way to enjoy Palgongsan Mountain. You can reach the summit of 870m sea level in 7 minutes by cable car, and if you fly in the sky in a cable car, you can see the famous scene of Palgongsan Mountain spread like a screen in front of you. Dongbong Peak and Seobong Peak, Byeongpungbawi Rock, and Yeombulbong Peak as well as Birobong Peak, the highest peak of Palgongsan Mountain, come into view. Up to its name, the scenery of the Sky Garden makes us feel great pleasure, and you can enjoy a gentle stroll in the Sky Garden.
